Dornan takes command of Air Guard

The Virginia Air National Guard pinned a new brigadier general during the July drill. During a ceremony held at the State Headquarters on July 14, Brig. Gen. John D. "Dave" Dornan received his stars and became the eighth officer to command the Virginia Air National Guard.

Dornan takes the helm of the VaANG from Brig. Gen. Bill Jones who retired in May. "Dave is a man of honesty, integrity and dependability. We are fortunate to have him at the helm of the Virginia Air National Guard," commented Brig. Gen. Robert Seifert, Air Guard State Headquarters chief of staff, before the ceremony. "In part, I'm standing here today because of the great work and dedication General Dornan has given the Virginia Air National Guard.

"The Adjutant General relies upon the assistant AG for Air when Air Guard resources are needed," Seifert continued. "And Dave Dornan is an outstanding leader who will do a great job representing the Virginia Air Guard at the highest levels.”

Over the years, his military positions included commander, operations officer, and A-Flight commander within the 149th Fighter Squadron. In November of 1995, he took a two-year military leave of absence from Northwest Airlines and served as the Operations Group commander for the 192nd Fighter Wing. After that assignment he resumed his commercial flying and was appointed vice-commander of the 192nd Fighter Wing. During May 1999, Dornan moved to the VaANG State Headquarters, where he served first as the State Headquarters director of operations and then deputy chief of staff.
