LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. — Staff Sgt. Sergio Romano, 192nd Intelligence Squadron, Virginia Air National Guard, was recently awarded a commander's coin for his excellent work at the 497th Intelligence Group Distributed Common Ground System. Romano helps keep war fighters alert to the latest threats in theaters of U.S. military operations and enables the DCGS Analysis and Reporting Team to tailor intelligence products to meet the needs of joint/coalition forces.

Maj. Gen. Craig Koziol, Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency commander, presented the coin to Romano during a visit to the 480th Intelligence Wing in August.

While there, Koziol toured the unit's operations center and was able to see firsthand, the contributions to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

"Combining active duty and Air National Guard makes us stronger and better positioned to defend our country," said Col. Jim Marrs, 480th Intelligence Wing commander. "I am proud to serve with the outstanding men and women of the 192nd Intelligence Squadron."

Under the Total Force Integration, active duty, Guard and Reserve forces train together, work together and fight together. TFI works seamlessly between the 480th IW and the 192nd IS, which have been working as a team since the 192nd IS was first activated on presidential orders in 2001.

"The Guard is an integral force of the DCGS enterprise supporting Global Operations," said Col. Jeffrey Mattox, assistant to the 480th IW commander. "We must leverage Total Force Integration in order to be successful."
