BLACKSTONE, Va. – Brig. Gen. Robert Newman, Adjutant General of Virginia, announced that Col. Bob Simpson will begin his duties as Director of the Joint Staff, Virginia Army and Air National Guard on Mar. 20, 2006. Newman said, “Col. Simpson brings a wealth of joint and command experience to the Director’s position. I look forward to working with Col. Simpson and the joint staff as we work through our present and upcoming challenges and opportunities. I am excited that we are getting an officer of Col. Simpson's caliber on the full-time team.”
As the Director of the Joint Staff, Virginia Army and Air National Guard Simpson will be the senior officer of the Joint Staff. He will be responsible for leading the Joint Staff and have responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Virginia National Guard. He will oversee all military functions assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters related to Virginia Army and Air National Guard activities and directs joint military programs throughout the Commonwealth.
Simpson is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute. Following his graduation in May 1978 he entered active duty with the US Army where he served until August 1992. He was appointed in the Virginia Army National Guard in November 1992 where he served in various command and staff positions at the battalion, brigade, division, and state Joint Force Headquarters level.
He has completed Ranger School, Airborne School, Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Course, Command and General Staff College, and the US Army War College. His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization Device, Master Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Belgian Parachutist Badge.
