Winkler, who returned Oct. 27 from a 10-month deployment to Afghanistan with the 29th Infantry Division Security Partnering Team, previously served as executive officer of the 1-111th.
“I look forward to the next few years,” Winkler said. “We all share the same values and I expect hard work, honesty, transparency and communication.”
He then led his troops in reciting the Soldier’s Creed.
“Ten months have gone by quickly,” Hall said as he reflected on his time in command of the unit. “I thank you for your support and hard work. I’m proud to have been associated with this unit.”
Hall will move on to join the staff of the 29th Infantry Division at Fort Belvoir.
The 1-111th is getting a seasoned commander who just returned from a combat deployment, according to Col. John Epperly, commander of the 116th Brigade Combat Team (Rear Detachment).
“Virginia’s had some of the most storied units in the National Guard and in the U.S. Army,” Epperly explained. “You are the last artillery unit in the Virginia Guard. Do your job well. You are the reigning King of Battle in Virginia!”
