Virginia Guard EO Office hosts Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest

FORT PICKETT, Va. — The Virginia National Guard Office of Equal Opportunity is hosting an essay/video contest for National Guard family members ages 7-18.

The theme for the contest is the significance of Martin Luther King, Jr’s vision and dream for the United States of America. 

Three prizes will be awarded based on age- ages 7- 10 (essay only); ages 11-14 (essay or video); and ages 15-18 (essay or video). 

Winners will receive a Virginia National Guard “goody bag” and will be invited to attend the agency’s Black History month event in February where awards will be presented. The grand prize winner will be asked to present their entry at the Black History month event.

The contest runs from Dec. 11, 2009 to Jan. 18, 2010. The essay topics are:

  • Children ages 7-10: If you could write a letter to Martin Luther King Jr., what would your letter say?
  • Children ages 11-18: Please describe in your own words or visual image the relevance of the following quotes by Dr. King: (Essay or Video):

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends"

All essays must be 500 words or less, typed and double-spaced.  

All video entrants must submit one original VHS, DVD or Power-Point presentation [e.g., performance video – instrumental, vocal, spoken word, or dance; documentary film; educational video] that reflects upon the contest question.

Essays and video will be judged on content, clarity, continuity, relationship to theme, effectiveness, and mechanics.
