Virginia Guard network defenders to hold Freedom Salute

Virginia Guard News Release

RICHMOND, Va. Virginia National Guard Soldiers from the Manassas-based Data Processing Unit will gather at the American Legion Post 176 in Springfield at 10 a.m. Dec. 13 to conduct a Freedom Salute in honor of the unit’s service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Qatar.  The address for the American Legion is 6520 Amherst Avenue.

Twenty Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the unit were formally welcomed home from overseas federal active duty Aug. 24 in a ceremony at Fort Belvoir. The Soldiers served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Qatar as a Regional Computer Emergency Response Team assigned to the 2nd Information Operation Battalion, 1st Information Operations Command.

Any news organization that would like to attend the event should contact Capt. Darren Hunter at 703-283-9870 or

During their deployment, the team deployed and upgraded more than 100 specialized intrusion sensors and accomplished dozens of successful computer defense assistance and network assessment missions. The team was able to identify malicious software previously undetected, mitigate the effects and prevent further intrusions upon Army networks.

The Freedom Salute Campaign is one of the largest Army National Guard recognition endeavors in history, designed to publicly acknowledge Army Guard Soldiers and those who supported them during the President's call to duty for Operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

The Freedom Salute will recognize the Soldiers, their families, employers and organizations that contributed significantly to supporting the unit during its deployment.

As part of the Freedom Salute campaign, each Soldier is scheduled to receive an American flag in a wood display case, a Defender of Freedom certificate as well as commemorative coins and medallions.
