Request Assistance

All military personnel have the right to present complaints, grievances, or requests for assistance to the Inspector General.

To complain without fear of reprisal is the right of any Soldier, Airmen, Civilian, or Family Member seeking IG help. After all, problem solving is one of the IG’s primary missions.

Before You Tell it to Your IG-

  • Be sure you have a problem, not just a peeve.
    • Are the cooks turning out lousy chow or was it just one bad meal?
  • Give your chain of command a chance to solve the problem.
  • Command and their staffs should earnestly strive to resolve the issue & not just send them/Soldiers to the IG simply because it’s too complicated or you don’t want to be bothered with it.
  • You do not have to present your concerns to your chain of command before visiting the IG, however, many problems must be addressed to the chain of command for resolution.
  • You do not have to tell anyone why you want to visit the IG.

If IG assistance is needed, contact your local IG first.

  • IG’s at higher commands will normally refer the case to the local IG for action

Be honest and don’t provide misleading information.

  • IGs will discover the truth quickly in most cases and there are penalties for knowingly providing false information

Keep I mind that IGs are not policy makers.

  • If a policy is flawed you can submit proposed changes on a DA form 2028

Keep in mind that IGs can only recommend, not order a resolution.

  • Only Commanders can order; the role of the IG is to advise the Commander

Remember IGs can only resolve a case on the basis of fact.

  • Your claim that a supervisor has violated the rules doesn’t make it fact. A claim must be supported with evidence

Don’t expect instant action on your request… Be patient.

  • ·Investigations take time, and IGs tend to have heavy workloads

Be prepared to take “No” for the answer.

  • ·In any case “yes” or “no,” the IG will explain why

Issues or complaints can also be submitted anonymously. However, you must be sure to include as much information as possible. Issues or complaints submitted anonymously with little to no detailed information make it difficult, and in most cases impossible to work.

If you believe the IG’s response to you is not fair, complete, or in accordance with law and regulation, or if you believe your interests may be jeopardized by visiting the Virginia IG, you may write Chief, National Guard Bureau, Attn: NGB-IG, Suite 11600, 1411 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA 22202-3259.

AR 20-1 Inspector General Activities and Procedures, Chapter 1, Section IV, paragraph 1-11 prohibits any type of disciplinary or adverse action taken against you or any other action that restricts you from filing a complaint, seeking assistance, or cooperating with an Inspector General. However, if you make an untruthful statement or knowingly make false accusations to the Inspector General, you are subject to disciplinary action.
