Virginia soldiers begin deployment to Bosnia

SANDSTON, Va. - Virginia National Guard soldiers began their deployment to Bosnia today as members of the 224th Aviation Battalion were mobilized in support of the Stabilization Force Mission in the Balkans. Family members said good bye at the 224th Aviation Battalion this morning as the soldiers boarded a bus that would take them to Ft. Dix, N. J. where they will complete their preparation for deployment to Bosnia.

This process will take place several more times this month and in early September as soldiers of the 29th Division Headquarters, 229th Engineer Battalion and 224th Aviation Battalion are mobilized and begin their deployment to Bosnia. The 29th Division will assume responsibility for the peacekeeping mission in Bosnia once the unit arrives there. Active, National Guard and US Army Reserve units will join together to meet the objective of this mission which is to keep peace in the Balkans. The soldiers are scheduled to return home in April 2001 when the deployment is complete.
