224th Aviation conducts media day

The soldiers and leaders of 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation recently hosted a media day with the goal of introducing members of the media to the men and women of the Virginia Army National Guard aviation program. Members of the media were invited to the Army Aviation Support Facility at Richmond International Airport were they received a briefing on the day's training activity and were then given the opportunity to travel with the Commonwealth's Army Aviators as they went about accomplishing their various tasks. Members of the media flew with the aviators on UH-60 Black Hawks as they went about their training missions.

The Virginia Army National Guard aviators must maintain the same performance standards as their active component counterparts. The media day gave members of the media an opportunity to see how this is accomplished and provide them with a greater understanding the of the Army National Guard aviation program and how the Army National Guard supports its state and federal mission.

Highlights of the Virginia Army National Guard aviation program include the deployment of the 986th Medical Detachment (Air Ambulance) to the Gulf Region in support of Operation Desert Storm / Shield in 1990 and 1991 and the deployment of 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2001 in support of the 29th Division. The 29th Division had the mission of enforcing the Dayton Peace Accord in the Balkans.
