Virginia National Guard to Conduct Welcome Home Ceremony

RICHMOND, Va. – Over 270 Virginia Guardsmen of the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation, Virginia Army National Guard, will participate in a welcome home ceremony recognizing their service during “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” The Army Guardsmen entered active federal service on Oct. 18, 2005 and traveled to Fort Dix, N.J. to prepare for overseas deployment. The unit deployed to Iraq in Jan. 2006. The unit home town is Sandston.

WHAT: Will participate in a welcome home ceremony recognizing their service during “Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, beginning at 2:30 pm.

WHERE: The Army Aviation Support Facility, Virginia Army National Guard, 700 Portugee Road, Sandston, Va 23150-5050

HOW: This ceremony officially welcomes home the Virginia Army Guardsmen who served with the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation in support of “Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

WHY: Guardsmen of the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation, Virginia Army National Guard, entered active federal service in Sandston, Va. on Oct. 18, 2005. Following a short period at their home armory the Guardsmen traveled to Fort Dix, N.J., where they completed training in preparation for overseas deployment. The Guardsmen deployed to Iraq in Jan. 2006. During this deployment the Guardsmen of 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation flew with Marine Aircraft Group 16 (Reinforced), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) in support of Marine operations in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. The Guardsmen returned to Fort Dix, N. J., Feb. 7, 2007 where they completed preparation for release from active federal service. On Feb. 15, 2007 the Guardsmen of the 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation will return to Virginia where they will be released from active federal service.
