General Assembly recognizes Virginia National Guard

RICHMOND - The Virginia General Assembly recognized the efforts and sacrifices of the Virginia National Guard with a center-aisle presentation of House Joint Resolution 853 commending the Virginia National Guard on Feb. 22, 2005.

Delegate Kirk Cox presented the Resolution to Maj. Gen. Claude A. Williams, Adjutant General of Virginia, in front of the House of Delegates.

The Resolution recognized the more than 4,000 Soldiers and 1,800 Airmen of the Virginia National Guard who entered active federal service in support of the nation's Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001, as well as the Virginia Guard's efforts in responding to natural disaster recovery operations, community support programs such as drug demand reduction and Commonwealth ChalleNGe and the Virginia Guard's support of the State Partnership Program with the Central Asian country of Tajikistan.

Two Airmen and two Soldiers were on hand to represent the rest of the Virginia Guard:

  • Master Sgt. Lori W. Flinn, a member of the 200th Weather Flight, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia Air National Guard, was assigned to the 19th Expeditionary ASOS supporting the 101st Airborne during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • Master Sgt. Angus A. Garner, a member of the 192nd Tactical Fighter Wing, Virginia Air National Guard, Sandston, Virginia, was assigned to the 379th Expeditionary Force during Operation Enduring Freedom.
  • Sgt. Valorie M. DaCosta and Spec. Alonzo Chandler, both members of the 229th Military Police Company, Virginia Army National Guard, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and were mobilized from February 2003 to April 2004 and performed customs officer duties in Kuwait and security duties in Iraq .
