Transportation company returns from Iraq

Communities across the Commonwealth hosted celebrations large and small to welcome home Soldiers of the 1173rd Transportation Company, Virginia Army National Guard returning from over a year of active federal service. On Dec. 19, 2005 the communities of Bowling Green, Gate City, Manassas, Roanoke, Rocky Mount, Virginia Beach and Staunton all welcomed the unit's return.

Soldiers of the 1173rd entered active federal service on Oct. 23, 2004 and traveled to Ft. Dix, N. J. where they completed preparation for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  After having served in Iraq for approximately one year, these Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers returned to Ft. Dix on December 10, 2005 to complete administrative processing for release from active federal service.
