Virginia Guard seeking EEO Counselors

By Maj. Elijah Ramsey
State Equal Employment Manager

The Virginia National Guard is currently seeking full time employees interested in becoming Equal Employment Opportunity counselors. The individual must have problem-solving skills, have a professional demeanor and understand the importance of confidentiality. If you are interested, please submit an application signed by your supervisor no later than Jun. 24, 2005.

Equal Employment Opportunity Counselors are essential in providing guidance to the complainant and resolving complaints at the lowest level. Depending on the complaint, an EEO Counselor may be away from their full time duties at least 20% of the time while working on a case.

New EEO Counselors are required to attend an initial 32-hour training course. The Equal Employment Opportunity Counselors workshop is scheduled for Jul. 11-14, 2005. We will also have an 8-hour refresher course on Jul. 15, 2005 for experienced counselors. It is highly recommended that new and experienced EEO Counselors attend the entire course, Jul. 11-15, 2005. Both courses are scheduled at the State Military Reservation (SMR) Virginia Beach, VA.

The training will qualify new Equal Employment Opportunity Counselors for their additional duty and provide refresher training for experienced counselors IAW 29 CFR 1614. The course will focus on the purpose of Equal Employment Opportunity, roles and responsibilities of counselors, policies, and procedures, writing counselor’s reports and complaint processing.

Upon completion of this four-day course, new counselors will be qualified to assist individuals in processing and resolving complaints and experience counselors will have completed the yearly training requirement.
