Environmental Program ~ Virginia National Guard

Soil and Water Conservation

The Mission of the VAARNG involves activities such as construction, maintenance, and training that result in land disturbance. In most cases land disturbance leads directly to soil erosion. The goal of this program is to track land disturbance activities initiated by the VAARNG and its tenants, and ensure that each project complies with the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Laws and Regulations. This includes submission, review and approval of an E&S plan and  obtaining Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) permits when necessary prior to land disturbing activity. Project site inspections are conducted periodically for the duration of each project to document any compliance deficiencies and define specific corrective actions to maintain compliance.

By proactively implementing erosion and sediment control  structures and systems to limit soil erosion and comply with State Minimum Standards, the VaARNG successfully protects water quality and sustains the usefulness of training lands for years to come.
